After reading all of the articles one in particular stood out to me, the Wives, Workers and Whores on the Cyberfrontier. I have never thought about how the internet affected omen and or especially women from different cultures. Using the interner as a dating service has helped a lot of men and women, but using it as an advertisement of woman for men is definitely a problem. Buying wives online, pornographic pictures and exotic pen pals, is definitely an issue. An issue I never really thought about, and at that I would like t\o see a change in how woman degrade themselves or are degraded by men over the web. Filipeno women advertise themselves in two ways, strong and independent the future and the old society, woman waiting on men, hand and foot. I believe cyber advertisement is a good in a lot of ways but women are damaging culture and, their sexuality is used to start a revolution. This doesn’t sound like how I would like to start a “quiet” revolution. Although it is a strong message, it could start a lot of hysteria. The culture imbalance of new and improved vs. old cultured Asia is creating a new service of marketing woman. A market that contains degrading effects, loosing the equality gained. I think women that want to advertise themselves is fine, you got it flaunt it. But I think the quiet revolution is forcing this idea that these women have to look this way and merge into this mold is a bad thing.

Personally I enjoyed reading these diary post and not only learning but being able to listen and reflect Mimi’s feelings. I understand the importance of reading and keeping up with a diary, I love to write. I may not always write when I want to remember something but I always jot something down if important enough. I recognize the emotion and thought process of a diary. I can not say I was born or living up-close and personal with a war time in my own area. My dad was a veteran of the gulf war so I have a deep understanding of the things that go on, but Vietnam was a lot worse then any other war, the terrible and destructive acts were despicable. Even though each of her journals were about something different they all had a similar presence of realness. She allowed her simple and complicated thoughts all to be written down for others to hear. She opened up herself to encourage her thoughts and not hide them which many people do. I am the type of person to get things of my chest by talking or writing, it is a healthy way for us woman and some men to be able to show our emotions with out any conflictions. Society today refrains us from being able to open up each angle and degree of our emotions, we have to suppress or impulses and instincts. She supplies a great example of why and how to let it all out healthy. Writing has always impacted my life, and it will for ever be my own personal escape.

Over the years I have seen a lot of people in minority do the dirty work. I come from a very rich town, although I am not rich most of my friends are. Almost every time I visit my friends houses I see Mexicans and Latinos doing yard work, painting and etc. It is very noticeable in my town, who does work and who lives there. I come from Rumson New Jersey. There are literally places you can go to pick up people to do yard work in a town over, there are set places to find workers illegally. My parents have always refused to use these immigrants. We are all about helping the new citizens in promoting themselves to make a better life for themselves and their families. But when you see a group of immigrants standing at a Wawa corner every morning waiting for work it makes you think. It makes me wonder of their intelligence and why they are not trying to pursue other and more appropriate occupations. Dirty work can only take anyone so far, it is not something an individual can do for their whole life. Dirty work as in yard work, painting, maids, nanniesa and etc can only take one so far. I personally think it is sad when people do not try to pursue better options for themselves. I see it every day, you see people and work with people from other countries working minimum wage working as hard as they can. It is upsetting although some of them are not legal citizens I still feel for their personal situation and their personal drive to try to make a better life and lifestyle. I do not agree with illegal immigrants but I do support the morality of it all.

A woman’s role in action films was typically the innocent prize piece. She was what the man was fighting for, a trophy. In recent years the woman’s role has been increasing and becoming dominates like the males. Woman like Angelina Jolie in Mr. and Mrs. Smith have been turning the tables and taking or sharing equal dominance. It is sad that this respect for woman is not being spread through out all cultures. Reading the articles about woman from other cultures it is sad that woman are still looked at as incapable of walking by themselves with out being shamed.

Placing myself in these poor woman’s shoes is close to impossible to imagine. Not being able to walk down the street to a store with out proper protection, aka a male escort. Being controlled by weakness that is pushed on to by a man’s though process, dictating your every which moves, is just not fair. I completely understand the whole different culture acceptance, but such degrading things where woman think it is normal to be so dependent just makes me sad. Like I have said in some of my other blogs, people really forget that it is not like the United States all over the world, a lot of woman from all different countries have to deal with issues and regulations like this on an every day basis, just because they are woman. They have to comply with staying home and continuing a pattern of repressed position to their daughters. Thinking there place is less then a male’s importance.

After reading the first sentence of the first article I knew exactly what type of reading it was going to be. Although it irritates me and makes me cringe a little, I enjoy reading pieces like this. Figuring out why and where these body expectations have come from. Even today I have ran into problems with appearance and body image from multiple girls. My cousin wants to loose 30 pounds because the new boy she is talking to likes petite girls. Things like this make me angered but I do understand why there are these expectations. Every single girl has flaws as does every guy, but it does not seem fair that the media dictates that more often then not the “ugly” or typical guy with the “hot” girl is way more common then the “hot” guy and “ugly” girl. The ideal woman was referred to as lack of any excess fat, I get the whole in shape thing, but no fat on a woman would be out right odd looking on most common shaped woman. Every person male or female have different shapes and body types, it is nearly impossible for anyone to say they have the perfect body. So for people who want to reach this they invented plastic surgery.

I can not lie, I am a fan of cosmetic surgery, I do not think woman should get every flaw on there body or face fixed. I have always wanted to get a boob job, and some day I will. But I wouldn’t do it for society I would do it for myself. I think the difference in certain cases is that woman are killing themselves trying to fit a mold that is not fitting and other cases are just minor improvements to live life to the fullest.

I read article depicting the differences between South Asian and Arabs people; after I read it I sat back and looked at the article. I did not completely understand what I was reading. I realized that the generalization people make from judgment was just being published. Although I still do not fully understand the purpose of knowing the difference between South Asian and Arabic people by features like nose bulb ness and how certain races smile because of their background has any importance. In every country there are physical and cultural differences. I was almost shocked reading this piece, I have quite a few friends that are Arabic and never though anything of it. Some people find it important to know who and what they are talking to. To me a person is a person no matter how they smile and why they smile the way they smile. Some of the facts were interesting, but I can’t grasp what people are supposed to take away from this reading. There is an actual magazine article labeling and putting out awareness to their readers of what Arabs “are”. Most of the articles we read left us with something to react to, to have an opinion. This article left me with a “blank” state confusion. It reminds me of the holocaust not to the extremity but the mere fact the writer is publishing facts about why an Arab looks so miserable and why they tend to be terrorist. Telling people to be aware of people of this nationality. I would be mortified if I came across something like this about one of my nationalities. It would make me feel bad about whom I was which is not fair; there are plenty of good and bad people in every race, gender and nationality. I am appalled to think people think this is okay, I am one for freedom of speech but warning us about our neighbors, come on.

Growing up every young girl looks in a magazine and compares them self to a model. Having gone through that it is a lot easier to understand this article. A lot of girls hold the aspiration of being a model or being in the fashion industry because they admire the woman they see within the magazine. Then shows like America’s Next Top model play a role, making it seem easily achievable to become a model. Young women focus on superficial vocal points instead of reaching full mental ability. Even on the show we witness cases like this, relying on their looks to pull through. Although this is not a focus in the article it is something that I have always thought about, I myself have wanted and focused modeling and things like America’s Next Top Model.

I was surprised when the article kept brining up how white girls were affected more by the magazine, I would think all young girls would interpret the magazine similarly. Some of the feminist are trying to say that girls are holding higher expectations of career goals because magazines like this are publicizing success. I do not know if I fully agree, I have not reached a career or a career goal yet so I do not know. But I feel like even with out magazines like Seventeen and Teen Magazine there would still be the same problem in correlation to something else. Media is a powerful tool in the United States, for all races and all genders. Magazines like this provide problems and strength for young woman and that will always be the case.

Reading this chapter I kept thinking of Jenny from Forrest Gump. Woman’s role in the 1960s had a huge impact on how woman are today. As I kept reading we got to violence and how it was dealt with and I thought of when Jenny got hit by her at the time boyfriend working with the Black Panthers. Battered and woman who have been assaulted is a very serious thing, I have been involved in helping girls get out of situations like that. Everyone has known someone put in that situation. It is heartbreaking to read things about oppression for race and also for gender. Only a select few woman have been able to make a difference in the past and each generation is getting better and better. Woman taking a stance and recognizing they do have will power and can create their own class and own beliefs with out being afraid of society’s consequences. In my opinion my mom is one of these women. My mom moved out of her house at 17 and worked extremely hard to get where she is today. Although she is a stay at home mom now, she got a college degree, paid for it all herself and has the option of doing whatever she pleases with that degree. It was hard enough for her I could not imagine the difficulties of a woman from a minority. All of the different movements I read about were crucial for today’s norms, I feel like I forget how different times used to be. I take advantage of what these strong women have done for us, and I plan on giving back to the community.

Almost all of our readings out of the book there have been incredibly unjust things done to woman all around the world. In the Chapter this week it was a less obvious “discrimination” but it is just as unjust. One section of the reading really bothered me, it was the part about masculinities and authority, how woman do not have the biological right to have any type of authority. Simply, because men are more powerful and assertive where women are dependent and passive. There is a quote from the reading referring to a new constitution from 1988 “ Not all men were admitted to public power, but all men admitted to sex right, to woman’s unpaid labor, sexual services, and reproductive powers- to women’s bodies.” The mere fact that this was written in 1988 is disturbing, the fact that is so close to present time and was so prejudice against woman. Even though the political world is based on “man’s authority” shouldn’t mean that unjustly practices are allowed by men against woman. This statement really stood out to me and made me think of the unfair rulings that woman have had to recently overcome. When I think of feminist I think of bitter woman, now I understand a lot more that equality is not as old as I thought. Woman all over the world still depend on feminist to rise up and stand their ground against close minded men and cultures. Out of all the readings this one seemed the most mind boggling. It really opened my mind to how serious of an issue this actually is.

While reading the first two chapters I found it difficult to follow the main idea. I was not sure when the chapters were trying to point at. One thing in the first chapter stuck out to me, the fact that one some women’s identifications the woman must provide her husbands name and information. But the male or the husband would never or usually would not have to reveal any information about his wife. I have noticed this before but never really thought about it in detail. I have notice when there is mail like a bill for my mom it will say Mrs. Michael Tooker, when should say just Laura Tooker or Mrs. Tooker.

What I liked about all three chapters is that it did not just focus on women discrimination, they focused on discrimination and overcoming. Women issues and other issues. For instance in the Citizenship chapter the book explained that if a family did not fit the accepted social family standard they were not allowed to be citizens. In the letter written by the Botswana woman was extremely powerful in its meaning. She claimed the judges decision was bias and a disgrace to women. She pointed out what a real woman is, not his ideal woman. She speaks of independence and power within herself, I thought this was a very powerful piece. She states the unimportance of marital status and amount of children effects being a citizen. She is correct, I agree that she could make a better citizen then someone with a “family,” it depends on someone not someone’s status’s and levels in class or culture. This type of discrimination is placed on people everyday, and its something we as a culture need to overcome.
